Fund of funds accounting software keeps the books of a fund that invests in other funds. It has two jobs: tracking every commitment, capital call, distribution, and NAV statement from the underlying funds, and allocating the results to the fund of funds’ own investors through capital accounts, fees, and statements.

This guide explains how fund of funds accounting works, what to test in a demo, and how 10 platforms compare. Some keep the books on both sides; others handle the work around the ledger. It ends with a decision path.

Summary

Key takeaways

  • A fund of funds runs two sets of books. On the investment side it is an LP in many funds; on the fund side it owes its own investors capital accounts, fees, and statements. Check that a platform handles both, or plan how two systems will reconcile.
  • GP documents are the bottleneck. Capital calls, distribution notices, and capital account statements still arrive as PDFs. AI extraction is now common, so test what happens after it: the review step, the posting, and the trace back to the source document.
  • For the books, compare FundCount, Allvue, eFront, LemonEdge, FIS Private Capital Suite, and Dynamo Software. Carta fits emerging managers that outsource administration.
  • Analytics and document tools sit around the ledger. Chronograph and AlternativeSoft cover monitoring and manager analytics, and Canoe Intelligence automates GP documents. None of the three keeps a fund of funds’ books.
  • FundCount is the only vendor in this list we found publishing a starting price. The others quote per engagement.

Definition

What is fund of funds accounting software?

Fund of funds accounting software records a fund of funds’ investments in underlying funds and its obligations to its own investors in one controlled set of books. The two sides look different:

Investment side: the fund of funds as an LP

What comes in
Capital call and distribution notices, capital account statements, NAV statements, and K-1s from every underlying fund
What the software must do
Record commitments, cash flows, and valuations per underlying fund, and handle reporting lags
Typical outputs
Schedule of investments, unfunded commitments, look-through exposure

Fund side: the fund of funds as a fund

What goes out
Capital calls and distributions to your own investors, capital account statements, K-1s
What the software must do
Allocate income, gains, and fees to investors and run the waterfall
Typical outputs
Investor statements, fund financial statements, performance by investor

Some platforms cover one side well and connect to another system for the other. That can work, but every reconciliation between two systems is a place where numbers drift. For manager selection and LP monitoring tools, see our guide to private equity portfolio monitoring software.

The workflow

How fund of funds accounting works

Each quarter, a fund of funds back office runs the same six workflows. A platform earns its place by how many of them it removes from spreadsheets.

Commitments and unfunded balances

  • Record each commitment by underlying fund and vehicle
  • Track unfunded commitments and recallable distributions
  • Forecast future calls for liquidity planning

Capital calls and distributions

  • Post calls and distributions as notices arrive
  • Match cash to notices in bank reconciliation
  • Call capital from your own investors to fund them

Valuation and the reporting lag

  • Book NAV from capital account statements, often a quarter late
  • Roll the last NAV forward for cash flows since the statement date
  • True up when the statement arrives, with an audit trail

Fees at two levels

  • Underlying fund fees and carry, as each GP reports them
  • Your own management fees, carried interest, and expenses
  • Clear disclosure of both layers to your investors

Allocations to your investors

  • Capital accounts by investor, series, and class
  • Waterfalls, equalization on subsequent closes, and transfers
  • K-1s for US partnerships

Look-through reporting

  • Exposure by sector, geography, strategy, and vintage
  • IRR, TVPI, DPI, and RVPI at fund and investor level
  • Overlaps where several managers hold the same company

2026 context

What changed in 2026

Two changes matter for fund of funds back offices this year.

AI extraction became a standard feature. Several vendors in this guide, including FundCount, Canoe Intelligence, and Dynamo Software, now extract data from capital account statements and notices with AI. The questions that separate them come after extraction: who reviews exceptions, which system receives the approved entries, and whether each posted figure links back to its source document.

The updated ILPA templates reached the inbox. ILPA recommends its updated Reporting Template from Q1 2026, with more detail on fees, expenses, and amounts paid to GPs and related persons. A fund of funds sits on both sides: it receives the template from GPs that adopt it, and its own institutional investors may ask for it. The new Performance Template applies to funds launched on or after January 1, 2026. Our guide to private equity reporting software covers both templates.

The shortlist

The 10 platforms

We list FundCount first because we publish this guide. We group the other nine by primary use and do not rank them: accounting platforms (2 to 6), fund administration with software (7), document automation (8), and monitoring and analytics (9 and 10).

Platform 01 of 10 · Accounting-firstOur product

FundCount: Best for keeping both sides of a fund of funds in one ledger

Quick verdict: FundCount records a fund of funds’ investments in underlying funds and its own investors’ capital accounts in one general ledger, with AI extraction for the GP documents that never arrive on a feed. It is an accounting system, not a manager research or due diligence tool.

Best for: fund of funds managers, the fund administrators that service them, and family offices that hold many fund interests.

What stands out

  • AI Document Intelligence monitors email notifications and investor portals, downloads capital calls, distribution notices, capital account statements, and K-1s, and converts them into accounting-ready data. Your team reviews exceptions instead of keying statements.
  • For co-investments, it reads Schedules of Investments (cost, shares, fair value) and calculates valuations, and bank reconciliation matches cash to calls, distributions, and invoices.
  • Partnership accounting runs the fund side: capital accounts, management and incentive fees, waterfalls, partial transfers, series, side pockets, and K-1s with Section 704 allocations, all posted to the same general ledger.
  • Portfolio accounting tracks commitments, unfunded balances, and IRR, TVPI, DPI, and RVPI per fund and per investor, with look-through reporting across funds, vehicles, and series. For hedge fund of funds, it ingests monthly NAV statements and tracks side pockets, gates, lockups, and performance-fee accruals.
  • The investor portal publishes capital account statements and K-1s to your own investors from the same record.

Watch-outs

  • FundCount does not do manager research, due diligence, or portfolio construction. Pair it with an analytics tool such as AlternativeSoft or Chronograph if you need those.
  • Implementation depends on clean commitment and cash flow history for every underlying fund. Budget time to load and reconcile it.

Pricing: FundCount publishes starting prices by firm type. Asset Management plans start from $35,899 per year and Private Equity plans from $38,389, with digital transformation and hosting fees charged separately. See FundCount pricing.

Ask in the demo

  • “Take a capital account statement from an underlying fund and show it posting to the ledger, with the source document one click from the posted figure.”
  • “Show the same capital call reaching our investors’ capital accounts and statements.”
  • “Run look-through exposure by strategy and vintage across all underlying funds.”

Stop re-keying GP statements into your fund of funds books

FundCount turns capital calls, distributions, and capital account statements into ledger entries, then carries them through to your investors’ capital accounts and statements.

Platform 02 of 10 · Accounting platform

Allvue: Best for a private capital suite with fund of funds accounting

Quick verdict: Allvue sells a fund of funds solution built on its private capital suite: fund accounting, management company accounting, an investor portal, and investor relations tools. Emerging managers can start with its Private Equity Essentials package.

Best for: fund of funds GPs that want accounting, investor communication, and fundraising from one vendor.

  • Private Equity Essentials packages accounting, reporting, and investor communication for emerging fund of funds managers.

Watch-outs

  • Allvue’s fund of funds page describes the suite rather than underlying fund workflows. Test how it processes capital account statements from your GPs, and how fast.
  • Allvue’s client base spans private equity, venture, private credit, and CLOs. Ask for fund of funds references of your size.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Process one quarter of capital account statements from our underlying funds and show the exceptions.”
  • “Show look-through exposure for one of our investors across all underlying funds.”

  • “Show a quarter-end close for a fund of funds with 50 underlying funds, including fees at both levels.”
  • “What does the Preqin integration add when we select new managers?”
Platform 04 of 10 · Accounting platform

LemonEdge: Best for complex multi-manager structures and look-through

Quick verdict: LemonEdge is a private markets accounting engine with a dedicated fund of funds offering. Its path allocation system links funds and fund families, so look-through reporting comes from the same transactions as the books.

Best for: fund of funds and multi-manager firms, and the administrators that service them, with structures that standard templates do not cover.

What stands out

  • Event-based partnership accounting with lot-level, multi-currency, multi-ledger charts of accounts.
  • Real-time transactional processing across the whole fund of funds structure with look-through, including closed, open, and hybrid underlying vehicles.
  • LemonEdge Algorithms brings non-standard calculations, such as subsequent closes, complex fees, and carry, from offline Excel into the system.
  • Canvas copies the live system so teams can model FX changes and investment or divestment decisions.

Watch-outs

  • LemonEdge is an accounting engine. Investor onboarding and servicing come through partners such as Eleven, so confirm who supports each part of the stack.
  • Flexible engines need configuration. Ask who builds your structures: LemonEdge, a partner, or your team.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Model one of our hybrid open-ended underlying funds and show its look-through to our investors.”
  • “Move our subsequent-close equalization workbook into Algorithms and show the audit trail.”

FIS Private Capital Suite: Best for enterprise private equity fund and partnership accounting

Quick verdict: FIS Private Capital Suite, formerly Investran, is enterprise fund and partnership accounting for private markets, with Digital Data Exchange as the investor portal. FIS’s public pages focus on GP structures rather than fund of funds workflows.

Best for: large private equity fund of funds and administrators that already run Investran or need enterprise-scale partnership accounting.

What stands out

  • Fund and partnership accounting across simple and complex structures, with configurable accounting events.
  • Digital Data Exchange is the investor portal, and FIS offers waterfall administration with Cascata.
  • FIS also sells Hedge Fund Portfolio Manager, a real-time, multi-currency accounting and position management system for hedge funds and their administrators.

Watch-outs

  • We found no FIS page describing fund of funds workflows. Test underlying fund cash flows, the NAV lag, and look-through in the demo.
  • Expect an enterprise-scale implementation.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Show capital activity from our underlying funds flowing into our investors’ capital accounts.”
  • “How do you handle a quarter-lagged NAV in our quarter-end close?”

Dynamo Software: Best for allocators that want CRM, research, and accounting together

Quick verdict: Dynamo Software covers the investment lifecycle for allocators and GPs: CRM, research, investor relations, portfolio monitoring, and a fund accounting module. Its HoldingsInsight service collects underlying fund holdings.

Best for: fund of funds teams that want manager research, investor relations, and accounting in one system.

What stands out

  • Dynamo says its platform supports private equity, venture, credit, real estate, infrastructure, and fund of funds.

  • The fund accounting module is a general ledger with GAAP, ILPA, and Invest Europe reporting and Excel-powered financial packages.
  • DynamoAI handles document summarization and financial data extraction.

Watch-outs

  • Dynamo’s strength is the front and middle office. If the books will live in Dynamo, test the accounting module on your hardest structure.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Show HoldingsInsight data for one underlying fund next to its capital account balance.”
  • “Close a quarter for a fund of funds in the accounting module, including fees at both levels.”
Platform 07 of 10 · Fund administration with software

Carta: Best for emerging managers that outsource admin and want look-through data

Quick verdict: Carta pairs fund administration software with its own fund accountants and tax team. It describes event-based fund accounting and look-through data collection, calculations, and reporting on the same platform.

Best for: emerging fund of funds managers in venture and private equity that prefer to outsource administration.

What stands out

  • Carta describes its fund software as having event-based accounting at its core.
  • Look-through data collection, calculations, and reporting sit in the same platform.
  • A dedicated team can run the full fund accounting process, and fund tax returns come from the same data.
  • An LP portal and an expert-led LP transfer service support your own investors.

Watch-outs

  • Administration is a service. Confirm the turnaround from underlying fund statements to your own investor statements, and what your team reviews.
  • Confirm how Carta books underlying fund activity when GP statements arrive late or only as PDFs.

Pricing: not published; quote-based, sized to fund size and complexity.

Ask in the demo

  • “What is the turnaround from underlying fund quarter-end to our LP statements?”
  • “Show look-through for one of our funds across its underlying portfolio companies.”
Platform 08 of 10 · Document automation

Canoe Intelligence: Best for automating GP document collection and extraction

Quick verdict: Canoe automates the collection of alternative investment documents and extracts data from capital calls, distribution notices, and capital account statements. It feeds accounting and reporting systems rather than replacing them.

Best for: allocators, family offices, and wealth managers that receive large volumes of GP documents and want to keep their current systems.

What stands out

  • Extracts and structures data from capital calls, distribution notices, partner capital account statements, and other documents.
  • System-agnostic integrations with accounting and reporting tools, including Addepar, Tamarac, Black Diamond, and Orion.
  • A database of 44,000+ funds, plus dashboards that surface overlapping exposures and forecast calls and distributions.

Watch-outs

  • Canoe is not a general ledger. You still need an accounting system for the fund of funds’ own books and investor allocations.
  • Its named integrations are mostly wealth platforms. Confirm the connector to your accounting system.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Process a batch of our GP documents and show the exception queue.”
  • “How does extracted data reach our general ledger, and who reconciles it?”
Platform 09 of 10 · Monitoring and analytics

Chronograph: Best for LP monitoring alongside your accounting system

Quick verdict: Chronograph LP gives allocators analytics across commitments at every level, from underlying portfolio companies to funds and vehicles. It is a monitoring platform, not a ledger.

Best for: institutional fund of funds that need deep portfolio analytics on top of an accounting system or administrator.

What stands out

  • Chronograph LP brings transparency to private capital commitments from underlying portfolio companies to funds, vehicles, and more.
  • ChronoAI and Semantic Search let LP users query structured data and portfolio documents in plain language.
  • Chronograph says a majority of the world’s largest LPs and GPs use it.

Watch-outs

  • Chronograph does not keep the books. Plan how its data reconciles with the general ledger and your investors’ capital accounts.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Reconcile your NAV for one underlying fund with the capital account balance in our ledger.”
  • “Show exposure by sector and geography across all underlying funds.”

AlternativeSoft: Best for hedge fund of funds analytics and manager selection

Quick verdict: AlternativeSoft is a portfolio analytics platform for fund of funds: manager research, peer benchmarking, portfolio construction, risk monitoring, and look-through investor reporting. It does not do fund accounting.

Best for: hedge fund of funds and multi-manager teams that select and monitor managers quantitatively.

Pricing: not published; quote-based.

Ask in the demo

  • “Build a risk-parity allocation across our current managers and show the look-through report for investors.”
  • “Show the due diligence workflow on one of our managers’ documents.”

How to choose: a decision path

Answer these in order. Most fund of funds managers end with one accounting platform plus one or two tools around it.

  1. Does your team keep the fund of funds’ books in-house?

    • Nogo to step 3.
  2. Do you want one vendor for accounting, CRM, and fundraising?

Running both sides of a fund of funds in spreadsheets?

FundCount is the only platform in this guide that publishes its starting prices, so you can check budget fit first. In the demo, we follow a capital call notice from an underlying fund through extraction and posting, then show it on an investor’s capital account statement.

Questions buyers ask

FAQs

What is fund of funds accounting software?

Software that keeps the books of a fund that invests in other funds. It records commitments, capital calls, distributions, and NAV from each underlying fund, and allocates the results to the fund of funds’ own investors through capital accounts, fees, and statements.

How is fund of funds accounting different from private equity fund accounting?

A private equity fund invests in companies; a fund of funds invests in other funds. That adds a second layer: the fund of funds is an LP that depends on GP statements, often a quarter late, and its investors bear fees at two levels. Look-through reporting is needed to show what the fund of funds actually owns.

How do you handle the reporting lag from underlying funds?

Many fund of funds roll the latest reported NAV forward for calls and distributions since the statement date, then true up when the new statement arrives. Agree the policy with your auditor, and make sure the software records which figures are estimates.

Can AI extraction replace manual entry of GP statements?

It removes most re-keying, but not review. Test how the platform flags exceptions, who corrects them, and whether each posted figure links back to its source document.

What is look-through reporting?

Reporting that shows a fund of funds’ exposure to the holdings of its underlying funds, by sector, geography, strategy, or vintage, in proportion to its ownership. It needs holdings data from each underlying fund, not just NAV.

Do fund of funds need a separate investor portal?

Not if the accounting platform includes one. A portal that reads from the same record as the ledger avoids exporting and re-uploading statements each quarter.

What should a fund of funds accounting demo cover?

One quarter end to end: receive statements from underlying funds, extract and review them, post to the ledger, roll forward NAV, allocate to your investors, publish statements, and trace one figure back to its source document.

Which platforms publish pricing?

Of the 10 platforms in this guide, only FundCount publishes starting prices on its website. The others quote based on modules, funds, users, and services.

How we built this guide

Methodology

What we included: platforms that keep a fund of funds’ books or handle the work around them: underlying fund documents, look-through, monitoring, and manager analytics. We excluded CRM-only tools; our guide to fund of funds CRM software covers them.

How we evaluated: underlying fund processing, accounting depth on both sides, investor allocations, look-through, reporting and controls, and published pricing.

Sources: each vendor’s public product pages, data sheets, and marketplace listings, reviewed in October 2026. FundCount capabilities come from FundCount’s product documentation. Watch-outs are our editorial assessment. We did not run hands-on tests of competitor products, and vendors did not review their entries.
